 1. What is the difference between an Ex p and an Ex d
enclosure?

 

While the Ex d (explosion-proof) type of protection contains
the explosion inside a very heavy and robust enclosure, the Ex p
(pressurization) type prevents the explosive atmosphere from entering the
enclosure. This allows the use of lighter stainless steel enclosures and
standard industrial components, dramatically reducing weight and maintenance
costs.

    2. Can I install a standard inverter in a pressurized
    enclosure?

     

    Yes, this is one of the major advantages of Ex p protection.
    Non-ATEX-certified components (such as inverters, PLCs, or industrial PCs) can
    be installed inside a certified pressurized enclosure, since the purging system
    with clean air or inert gas eliminates any risk of ignition before power-up.

    3. What happens if pressure is lost inside the enclosure?

     

    The IEC 60079-2 standard provides for redundant safety
    systems. In the event of a loss of overpressure below the minimum limit, the
    control system immediately activates an alarm or disconnects the power supply,
    depending on the zone classification (Zone 1 or Zone 2) and the risk
    assessment.

     

    4. In which ATEX zones can Ex p panels be installed?

    Pressurized panels are suitable for installation in Zones 1 and 2 (for gases) and Zones 21 and 22 (for dust). Depending on the required level of protection (pxb, pyb, or pzc), they guarantee maximum safety even in the constant or occasional presence of explosive atmospheres.

    5. What certifications must accompany a pressurized panel?

    Each panel must be supplied with the CE marking and the Ex symbol, accompanied by the Declaration of Conformity to ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. It is also essential that the technical file include the pressurization system certificate and the final inspection of the complete panel.
